INTO THE UNKNOWN
Nowadays in Pakistan, being a Physical Therapy student is like walking into the deserts of Mars with no idea of where to go and no idea of how you get there. For universities, it’s a great business because everyone is attracted to the word ‘Doctor’. They give you a degree in five years of tough study schedule, you become a Doctor of Physical Therapy and that’s it. Now another battle begins, finding a job. Let’s say you were very lucky to find a good job. Does your journey end here? If you are wise enough to know the field of Physical Therapy you will realize that your battle is just about to begin, with your patients, colleagues, medical doctors and even with the nurses. If you are still there trying to solve the puzzle, you will figure out that you have just passed a degree with little or no practical knowledge. If a medical doctor needs 1 year of training after MBBS then you need it too. As a matter of fact, your field is more about practical knowledge and less about theoretic knowledge. Your field is a skill and no matter how many times you have studied that sciatica gives pain which radiates down the leg and you have to perform’ SLR’ for differential diagnosis. If you never did it practically on a real patient then believe me when I tell you this, you have failed to become a doctor. Your institute has failed to make you one. Because on that very first day of your appointment, you are about to treat real patients. They came to you with immense pain and believe that physio works better than medicine. They are certain that you will do the magic which drugs can’t. Hold on; can you? They have come to you because you claim to be a doctor, wait; are you? The answers to these questions will rip your heart off, if you really understood my point. Now the blame game starts, my institute is responsible for this, my teachers never taught me this, I was never trained, there is no council and government is not offering any training like it does for MBBS students. To some extent you are right. But where is your part in all that? Have you ever planned to practically study the foot, wrist or even back? Are you planning to go to a hospital’s Physical Therapy department to load yourself with some skills? (But for the sake of learning not certificates) Have you ever thought of getting out of that comfort zone where you do nothing but blame? Have you ever planned that when you get your dream job, you will fight for the rights of this field?
In this era with this degree, you have stepped in to the unknown. So what are your plans? Do you want to stand there and just watch? Or do you want to take a look around and figure out how you will survive? What footprints you will leave for your juniors?
Here is what I have to say, be the physio you want to learn from, be the person who inspires you, take your sword and fight against your deficiencies, if you are determined enough you will conquer them. Be your teacher, be your mentor, and if you have the courage, be your inspiration. Here you are on your own, be on your own.
